Think the warnings about wireless access points on coporate networks is overblown?

Two men have been arrested for hacking into Lowe's network and gaining access to credit card transactions in Salina, Kan.; Wilkesboro, N.C.; Long Beach and Visalia, Calif.; Louisville, Ky.; and Rapid City, S.D. They were sitting in a parking lot in
Southfield, MI.
They gained the access through a wireless access point at the Southfield store. From what I can glean off the news reports, they were caught because they attempted to access the computers at the company headquarters in North Carolina. The FBI was called, and traps were set that caught the men.
If that is correct, these men were caught ONLY because they happened to attempt the central system. What would worry me is that this implies that if they had ONLY gone after the stores, they might not have been caught - and they may have then gotten away with much more than 6 credit card numbers.
