The Federal Elections Commission has found a way to duck the issue of 527s - the non-profit issues organizations unaffiliated with campaigns. House Majority Whip
Blunt calls them 'shadow organizations' that 'operate in secrecy' but I don't know about you, but it seems to me that MoveOn.org and the MoveOn.org campaign fund have been pretty open and visible about what they are doing. Anything that is supported by loudmouths like Janeane Garafalo, Michael Moore and Al Franken would have a hard time 'operating in secrecy'.
Anyway. the FEC's General Counsel told them yesterday that the issue was 'very complex' and that it would be appropriate to give the decision another 90 days while they study the issue. This essentially opens up the Presidential campaign to the 527's dollars.
So if any Republican supporters who are not affiliated with any campaign want to start a Conservative 527, I say "Bring it on". Meantime, MoveOn.org will be able to keep on what they are doing, so it's safe to
make a donation.
More on 527s:
BTW, it seems to me that the reason that most 527s, and all of the very successful ones, are dedicated to liberal causes is pretty clear. Liberals have felt marginalized by the conservative media and outraged by the conservative political machine, and have been more willing to step outside the mainstream political arenas. MoveOn.org was started as a grassroots response to the ridiculous attacks of the Conservative Congress on the sitting POTUS for his (admittedly stupid) personal pecadillos. So the conservatives have only themselves to blame for starting this movement. Conservative organizations have tended to work in the more old-fashioned way, and are behind the times.
You want to start a conservative 527? Buy MoveOn.org's
50 Ways To Love Your Country, quit your job, cut ALL ties to any current political campaign (THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT) and start your own 527.
Oh. The quitting your job part might be a problem, because as soon as you don't have any money anymore, you'll go back to being a Democrat. oh well.
