Carmillo, CA. A middle school social studies teacher who happens to be gay wasn't having any problems until he got married in San Francicso on Valentine's day.
His co-workers knew he was gay, and he told them in a staff meeting about his marriage. No problem, he received well-wishes from his co-workers, time to move on. Apparently, another teacher decided to do something about it. So she let it drop in her class that he was gay and had gotten married.
You remember middle school, don't you? A rumor in middle school may be the only thing in the universe faster than light. And at least some teachers went ahead and let the rumor spread, unchecked and undiscussed.
So when he was asked about the rumor by some of his students, he acknowledged that yes, he was gay, and yes, he had gotten married.
"A boy began muttering negative comments under his breath, and Fanelle read aloud the sexual harassment code in a student handbook. He also used the opportunity to talk about suffrage, bigotry and the Magna Carta."
A parent complained and pulled his kid out, but later backed off. A few weeks later, at a school board meeting, the real trouble began. David Maddux, who does NOT have a child in Fanelle's class, said:
"I come to you tonight with a heavy heart," Maddux told the board. "A seventh-grade history teacher announced to his students he's gay. I'm very upset and disappointed that this person was bringing his homosexual platform to the classroom. Mr. Fanelle opened a homosexual dialogue, telling his class he used to be married and he decided he wanted to be homosexual. He said he had homosexual feelings and tendencies."
Fanelle was never married. He never told the kids he was gay until another teacher forced him to. Fanelle's "homosexual agenda" was simply this: He wanted to teach Social studies, to maintain a private life, and to be free from harassment. What's the problem?
Hypocrites.
