Armstrong Williams seems to think that gay marriage is a
church issue:
After all, why do gay couples want the church's blessing? They could go about their business just fine without having been "wed" in a church, right?
Of course, gay marriage has nothing to do with the church. Gay couples get married in my church all the time. Unitarian-Universalist, UCC, some reform Jews, and others are happy to hold marriage ceremonies for gay couples. The issue is one of legal rights to inheritance, power of attorney, and the special rights afforded to spouses - like the right
not to testify against your spouse.
If your church doesn't want to marry gay couples, they shouldn't. As a matter of fact, some churches won't marry couples who don't meet certain criteria...and whether it makes sense (when a priest won't marry a couple after a divorce) or I find it personally offensive (some churches still won't marry interracial couples) it is
their right to refuse to officiate. But it is
NOT their right to have government policy follow their beliefs.
