Voice from inside a hole: "I am the president of Iraq. I wish to negotiate."
Soldier's answer: "Regards from President Bush".
I actually hope that the soldier in question had the wit to actually answer with that. It makes a great story.
Saddam has been shown to be the coward we all knew he was, especially in contrast to his sons who fought to the death. He also apparently has given up information allowing the US military to arrest many other figures.
This is all good. Saddam and his regime were bad, and now that we're in it, it's best to get him in custody, and, other than the long time to find him, it couldn't have worked out better -- he's in custody, he is discredited by his cowardice, and he is bargaining for his life with information.
It doesn't change the fact that we are in this war because we were lied to. There have been no WMD finds. The story has changed -- our goal was supposed to be get the WMD, now it's get Saddam.
Hopefully, this starts a new phase. With apologies to
Winston Churchill, maybe this really is the beginning of the end, rather than the end of the beginning.
