2004 is going to be interesting.

First, Lawrence v. Texas. The Supreme Court says that what happens between consenting adults is none of the government's business. (You'd think that was a conservative issue).
Then
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy becomes the highest rated show on cable television. Does it really matter? Maybe not, but the fact is that people are watching and seeing gay men who are showing their sexuality and being accepted by straight people. It can't be a bad thing.
Then, the Cleveland Heights
Domestic Partnership law. This is why I live in Cleveland Heights - Even though one of our Councilmen, Jimmie Hicks, Jr., seemed to think that forcing a ballot initiative on recognizing that gay people want to be families too would result in
ingorance and religious extremism ruling the day, he was proved wrong. (This isn't an isolated incident. Cleveland Heights has a history as one of the most progressive cities in the country. We abolished For Sale signs to stop block busting. We integrated early. We passed a law creating CH as a Nuclear-Free zone. We've been a haven for interesting, creative people. And during the Russian Jewish emigration in the 1980's, we welcomed hundereds of new residents. Now if only we could get them to pass a school levy.)
Then, The Mass Supreme court says that the Mass Constitution's equal protection provisions mean that Mass has to issue
marriage licenses to gay couples.
The backlash against these liberating, democratic decisions has begun.
President Bush and other conservatives are calling for the Federal Marriage Amendment. Mitt Romney wants to amend the Mass Consitution, to remove equal protection!
And in Maryland,
High Schoolers are being shown the correct way to handle homosexuals. (thanks to
my favorite librarian for finding this one)
I guess we're going to find out just how many of those conservatives are truly compassionate, and how many are just scared little men threatened by a lifestyle that really has nothing to do with their lives....unless they're actually in a full Homosexual Panic!
Hmmm. Ever notice that it's those of us truly comfortable with ourselves who find it possible to be comfortable with other people?
